Deepika Padukone 'refuses £1m private dance'

Deepika Padukone has reportedly turned down close to a million pounds to perform a private dance for a London-based family.

The actress can currently be seen in Dum Maaro Dum performing a controversial item number.

A source told Mid Day: "The family who made the offer is extremely rich and wealthy and from Knightsbridge.

"They were ready to pay her a bomb just for one song. The actress initially thought it was a joke, but when the proposal came in form of a letter with the amount cited, she was shocked."

The source added that the family wanted Padukone to perform the dance from the film, while wearing the same outfit.

Padukone admitted she was surprised to receive skirts in the post from fans urging her to cover herself up due to her skimpy outfit seen on screen.

Deepika fails to impress Bipasha

There is a sense of rivalry visible between Bips and Deepika these days, according to reliable sources.
Bipasha considers herself a better item-dancer than Deepika and is downplaying Deepika's latest item number even in front of the press, it is further learnt.

Mallika, Deepika in for item songs

MUMBAI: Hot item songs have become the order of the day, yet again. In between, item songs had gone extinct in Hindi films, but after 'Munni' (Dabangg) and 'Sheila' (Tees Maar Khan), item songs are back and how! In fact, several film-makers attempting masala films are ensuring that there's scope for at least one item number in the film.

What's even more surprising is the fact that the top league actors are more than enthusiastic when it comes to featuring in item songs, looking at the popularity of these numbers.

Mallika Sherawat's 'Razia' from Thank You and Deepika Padukone's 'Dum Maaro Dum' from Dum Maaro Dum have just been released, while David Dhawan has just filmed an item song on Sanju and Lisa Haydon for Rascals and Ready will feature a song on -- you guessed it right -- Salman Khan.

That's not all, there's talk that SRK will feature in an item song in his home-production Always Kabhi Kabhi, directed by Roshan Abbas.

Why everyone is sending short skirts to Deepika?

Deepika Padukone gets unusual gifts from fans. Feels it is a reaction to her raunchy item number
Deepika Padukone gets fan mail delivered to her house on a daily basis. Most of it consists of soft toys, chocolates and greeting cards from fans professing their love for her. However, this time when she returned from her Aarakshan shoot in Bhopal, the actress was shocked to see nine skirts sent to her! This is the first time she has got such gifts.

Different place
A source reveals, "Usually her fan mail is kept in a separate room. So whenever she comes back from outdoor shoots, she personally sits and reads through each one. There are times when she's replied to her fan's letters as well. But nothing prepared her for nine skirts!"The length of the skirts vary. "Some are extremely long, while others are short. She feels these are reactions to her Dum Maro Dum item number.

Cover-up
While some fans might have liked her sexy look, others want her covered up. The lyrics in the song also refer to the skirt (Aaj mere liye chair khich raha hai, kal meri skirt khichega. Khichega ki nahi?).Deepika reacts, "I've just come home. It has just hit me it's all because of Dum Maaro Dum."

Item girl Deepika receives 9 skirts from fans

Receiving gifts like soft toys, chocolates and letters from fans is nothing new for Deepika Padukone. But she wasn't expecting skirts as presents for sure. All thanks to her raunchy avataar in item number Dum Maaro Dum.

"Usually her fan mail is kept in a separate room. So whenever she comes back from outdoor shoots, she personally sits and reads through each one. There are times when she's replied to her fan's letters as well. But nothing prepared her for nine skirts," a source told Mid Day.

Are the skirts as skimpy as in her dance sequence? "Some are extremely long, while others are short. She feels these are reactions to her Dum Maro Dum item number," added the source. Some fans have liked her skimpy skirt while others want her to cover-up.

How has Padukone girl reacted to these unusual gifts? "I've just come home. It has just hit me, it's all because of Dum Maaro Dum," the sexy actress told the tabloid.

Even the lyrics in the song refer to her skirt, Aaj mere liye chair khich raha hai, kal meri skirt khichega, khichega ki nahi.

Deepika roots for Virat Kohli

The petite gal went straight to the Jamtha Stadium from the airport on Saturday afternoon, and then hopped back to the city, in-between the match to attend a press conference, which she wrapped up in almost ten minutes. And then she insisted that TOI accompanies her back to the stadium, so that the interview could be done on the way because she didn't want to miss the last overs of the match. And we settled down to a relaxed tete-a-tete...

Maiden effort
Dressed in an off-white sleeveless top with a matching fedora hat, she left everyone in awe. Ahead of her visit to Nagpur, there was a lot of buzz around her live performance on a sizzling number from Dum Maaro Dum, which was later cancelled. Ask her if she was disappointed, and she candidly replies, "Yes, but at the end of the day, I am glad that I got an opportunity to come here. I am in the middle of the shoot for Aarakshan in Bhopal and with great difficulty I managed to come here. I am someone who believes in rehearsing a lot before coming up on stage, so, I didn't want to do something in a hurry. Hopefully, I will come back soon and perform here."

Bowled over
Ask the actress about her experience in the city, and she can not hide her excitement. "This is my first visit to Nagpur, and I am still waiting to get my hands on some oranges. As soon as we walked on to the ground during the halftime, the crowd went crazy. This is something I will cherish forever." Happy with Bollywood's innovative idea of promoting films at cricket venues, she adds, "'I think cricket and cinema are like religions in our country. So, it's nice to get the two together and hope this combination works." The actress is an ardent supporter of Team India. Ask Deepika about her favourite cricketer, and she says, "Sachin is iconic, but I think among the younger lot, Virat Kohli is extremely talented. I just hope he doesn't lose focus, and if he continues playing the way he does, he has a great future."

Munni and Sheila beware
Grapevine says that her item number in Dum Maaro Dum has all the ingredients to push songs like Munni and Sheila to the background. She laughs and says, "Whether it's a song, an ad or a film, any form of work I do, I want it to be a huge success. But, that's not my sole focus when I am working. I enjoyed dancing on this number and if it becomes as big a hit as Munni and Sheila, then it's great!"

Ask her if there were any apprehension performing on this song, which was originally picturised on Zeenat Aman, and she says, "Not at all, if I'm nervous, how will I perform. If the concept and the song would have been exactly the same like Zeenatji's, then I would have felt the pressure. Rohan's version of the song is completely different and Pritam has modified it a lot. Of course, Zeenatji's version is iconic, and we as youngsters will never forget it."

A few months back Deepika Padukone had stated that she was not interested in item songs. "I have always said that it depends on the script and this song was the demand of the script. I will never say I am not going to do this or that because it really depends on my frame of mind at that point of time," she clarifies.

Grounded star
She is currently shooting for Aarakshan being directed by Prakash Jha, who has a reputation of being a serious taskmaster. Ask Deepika about her experience working with him, and she says, "If you are doing a very serious film and you are joking around on the sets, it can be a distracting factor. But, it doesn't mean that Prakash is a serious man all the time. After the pack-up he's very jovial and a chilled out person and a wonderful host." In Prakash's film, Deepika is sharing screen space with Big B for the first time. And reports claim that she took some tips from Big B... She explains, "I'll be a fool if I didn't. People think he's a very serious and intense person, but I had an amazing time working with him. I was very nervous in front of him in the first few days, but today, I am very comfortable working with him because his presence has a calming effect."

It's my life
Deepika and Sonam Kapoor's joint fun comments aimed at ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor on Karan Johar's show created quite a flutter. Ask her, if she wishes she hadn't said all that in hindsight, and she says, "I'm OK as long as Ranbir and I understand each other. It really doesn't matter what other people say." There are also lots of speculations about her relationship with Sidhartha Mallya, which might bother her at times. Ask her if she would like to clear the air, and she says, "I'm not answerable to anybody! Mere statement dene se kuch badlega toh nahin. Media will say what they want to, so, I would rather keep quiet and watch the drama."

At such a young age, she's under media scrutiny 24x7. Does that make her relationships more vulnerable? She replies, "When you are in the limelight, these are the things you have to be prepared for from the very beginning. You learn to accept the nice things people say and ignore the things, which are not true. I have taught myself to handle the situations sensibly."

Deepika, Sonam face tough consequences for going against Ranbir

Latest reports from the tinsel town confirmed that Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor will not be joining Ranbir Kapoor in his July 2011 world tour. While actresses like Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Malaika Arora Khan will be a part of the tour, Deepika and Sonam have been asked to quit.

It may be recalled that Rishi is upset with the two actresses for making rude remarks on his son's character in 'Koffee With Karan Season 3' and he prefers Katrina over Deepika and Sonam.

Rishi Kapoor admitted that it is impossible to bring Deepika-Katrina on board together saying, "Deepika wanted to come along. We didn't want any stress behind the stage. See, as it is, Ranbir has never been on stage. We want it to go smoothly, no backstage jhik-jhik, please!"

Sonam has backed out from the tour as well. Rishi Kapoor explained, "She begged off saying she didn't have a song repertoire to stand on stage with Katrina and Priyanka."

"We start off in the UK, US and Canada. Then after six months we'll go for another lap of the tour. I've done these world tours over and over again. But for Ranbir, the world tour would be a new experience," he added.

Deepika is face of her dad's Olympic Gold Quest

Actress Deepika becomes the face of her father, ace badminton player Prakash Padukone's organisation Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ).

"I am the face of Olympic Gold Quest. I have just come on board. Olympic Gold Quest is training our athletes for the Olympics in 2012," Deepika told IANS in an interview.

Prakash Padukone launched OGQ a few years back with billiards player Geet Sethi. The negligence of the government towards the athletes made them set up the organisation, which is being funded by corporates and individuals to produce some world-class sportsmen.

"Not enough is being done. In the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, we have proved that there is enough talent in our country. Not enough is being done in terms of promoting the talent," said Deepika.

"Government is not taking enough care of our athletes. That's why my father and Geet Sethi have set up Olympic Gold Quest, which is a non-profit organisation and the funds come from corporate houses. All of us can also contribute individually," Deepika stressed.

"The fund is used to train athletes. Whether it is tennis, badminton, their coaching, OGQ will take care of their equipment, uniforms and whatever else is required," she said.

Sportsmen like Leander Paes, Viswanathan Anand are already on board. Hockey Olympian Viren Rasquinha is the chief executive of OGQ.

Performance in sports also marks a country's development, says Deepika.

"I think the laurels that a sportsperson brings to the country are also a kind of development. Today, when we talk about America or Australia - these are the countries which are very, very popular in sports as well. So, it's not only the economic, political or infrastructural development, even sports can put you up there on the world map," said Deepika.

The actress maintains that the organisation would soon felicitate the Commonwealth and Asian games winners.

"We will be felicitating OGQ athletes, who performed well in the Asian Games and in the Commonwealth Games," said Deepika.

Deepika and Sonam learn from Kareena

Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor have decided not to talk about their personal lives because they feel "it takes away the attention from your work."

Dear New Actresses, if that were true, Kareena Kapoor would not have been the country's No 1 actress. Bebo has never kept her relationship with beau shrouded in secrecy.

Dippy and Sonam rated Kareena Kapoor as the best actress among five other actresses on Koffee With Karan. So girls, next time, just think before you speak. Contradicting yourself in a span of ten minutes doesn't make you seem very bright.

Did Sonam actually admit to her relationship (yes, it is still very much on) with her I Hate Luv Storys director Punit Malhotra?

When Karan asked her if she was single, Sonam's response was: "You know, Karan...." Even KJo was taken aback by her answer.
